Artistic Temperaments Festival: {Love} Songs without Words

A celebration of {Love} Songs without Words, performed by music students of the University of Southampton.

Songs without Words, invented by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, caught on in a big way. Our Valentine’s Day lunchtime concert presents examples of the sincerest form of flattery composed by Gounod, Milhaud, Cécile Chaminade, Norman O’Neill, and Edward German. You will also be treated to a practically unique orchestral Song without Words by Gustav Holst, along with some original Mendelssohns performed on our 1826 Broadwood, and some arranged for violin by Ferdinand David, leader of Mendelssohn’s orchestra in Leipzig. Our student performers also include some real songs with no words, including Rachmaninoff’s famous vocalise.
