INTERN INSIGHTS: Introducing Martha Raban

Intern Insights are back! We begin with introducing Martha Raban, new Music Showcase Intern for the University of Southampton Music Department.

I am currently in my second year studying Music and so far, I have really enjoyed my experience at Southampton. My primary instrument is double bass (both classical and jazz) which has allowed me plenty of opportunities to perform and be involved in a range of ensembles.

Through this internship I hope to pursue my passion for performance by gaining first hand backstage experience of concert life and learn more about the marketing and day to day running of successful venues such as Turner Sims. I am also particularly looking forward to having such an active role in shaping the musical community of Southampton.

Despite there being little to do outside my degree at this current time, I have found it more important than ever to try and find new things that aren’t centred around my university experience. In this spirit, I have been enjoying home baking, YouTube yoga and streaming online concerts. A particular favourite was A Christmas Celebration with John Rutter and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, which really helped lift my spirit.

Despite current circumstances, I am really looking forward to my internship with Turner Sims and dealing with all the challenges that the current climate will present for the arts as a whole, and to being part of a creative and inclusive way forward.
